Something I’ve always found fascinating, and a personal guilty pleasure is celebrities and their brands. These brands are so totally amazing because there are so many people, and so much money and time spent curating and building these brands, however crazy and “out there” they may be.
One of my personal faves? RICHARD SIMMONS.
Richard Simmons’ success stemmed from his own experience — He began his interest in fitness because he was overweight. He helped himself and then used his brand to better others. Simmons began his career as a fitness instructor, opening gyms and helping others to lose weight and get healthy. BUT it was his PERSONALITY that kept people interested.
I mean he worked in LA, how many fitness instructors do you think work in LA?!
He took advantage of all the opportunities he was given and fully committed. Whether that was aerobic classes taught at the mall, interviews on late night talk shows or guest appearances on General Hospital (yes, seriously.) And do you know what “part” he played in all of these appearances? HIMSELF! His charismatic and FUN personality made people pay attention. He discovered his point of difference, what made him stand out from every other fitness coach in LA and WORKED IT.
Now I’m not saying be like Richard Simmons, but we could all learn to be a little bit more like Richard Simmons. Owning your personality and just being the most extreme, memorable, charismatic version of yourself and learning not to give a flying f#$% what other people think. I LOVE IT.
*After Simmons disappeared from the public, a few producers of a podcast built an entire show around trying to track him down. I don’t recommend you listen to it, as it is a total invasion of privacy and celebrities are people too. However, it is pretty amazing that people are still so fascinating by Richard Simmons brand almost 30 years on.
NOW THAT’S GOOD BRAND BUILDING!
